RICHARD BONA & MANDEKAN CUBANO
„Imagine an artist with Jaco Pastorious’s virtuosity, George Benson’s vocal fluidity, Joao Gilberto’s sense of song and harmony, all mixed up with African culture. Ladies and gentlemen, we bring you Richard Bona!” Los Angeles Time
Richard Bona has been recognized as one of the planet’s five revelations of the past decade. A complete artist, an absolute master of his art, and a melodist of rare elegance and sensuality, he’s also a poignant singer, and a member of that exclusive club, "the world’s best bassists.”He is a gem!», and we are proud to show this gem as the crown of this season's festival.
He was born in 1967 in the Cameroon. Richard Bona's talent could come out very early. He started to use his unbelievable, amazing and natural ability to learn any instrument only by watching it being played.
In 1989, at age 22, Bona moved to Paris and soon began working with such leading French musicians as violinist Didier Lockwood and bassist Marc Ducret as well as such African stars as Manu Dibango and Salif Keita.
Since arriving in New York in 1995, bassist-vocalist-composer Richard Bona has been one of the most sought-after talents on the scene. To date, guitarists Larry Coryell, Mike Stern and Pat Metheny, keyboardists Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Jacky Terrasson, Bob James, Sadao Watanabe, Branford Marsalis, David Sanborn, Bobby McFerrin and Randy Brecker have enlisted his services as a sideman.
His albums revealed a wonderful storyteller, a surprising musician, and a spellbinding vocalist. His unique style is situated at the crossroads of a horde of influences - jazz, bossa nova, pop music, afro-beat, traditional song, and funk. He released eight albums. With numerous awards, performances, and years of expertise, Bona has become one of the most accomplished and sought-after musicians of this generation.
As he continues to redefine his sound, Richard has released his Afro-Cuban project Mandekan Cubano on June 2016 with his new album “Heritage”. We have the exclusive opportunity to present it at the Liburnia Jazz this season.
